WHAT ARE LINES AND WRINKLES?
One of the most prominent signs of aging, both intrinsic (naturally occurring), and extrinsic (mostly due to UV exposure) is the development of fine lines and wrinkles.
HOW DO LINES AND WRINKLES OCCUR?
Lines and wrinkles occur because of various processes that could include:
- Oxidative damage from UV exposure with resultant photoaging.
- Diminished levels of hyaluronic acid in the skin, most particularly in the epidermis with resultant dry, saggy skin.
- Trans epidermal water loss with resultant dry skin
- Diminished levels of collage and elastin in the connective framework of the skin with resultant loss of elasticity
Parts of the face associated with expression, especially around the eyes, the forehead and around the mouth are particularly vulnerable to the development of lines and wrinkles.
“WHY” IS IT IMPORTANT FOR YOU?
In the skin, photoaging or premature aging results in formation of lines and wrinkles. Use of skin care products with active ingredients aimed at preserving barrier protection, increasing skin hydration, stimulating production of collagen, and targeting reduction of reactive oxidative species can result in prevention and or improvement of the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. There are other modalities of treatment depending on the severity of lines and wrinkles.
